Welcome to The Bath House, Isle of Wight – a café built around two things done properly: good coffee and seriously fresh food.

We’re not a spa, we’re not a chain.

We’re a local spot bringing sushi and coffee together in a way the Isle of Wight hasn’t seen before.

Who's idea was this?

Mike Christie, Cowes resident, member of chart-topping vocal group G4 and organiser of the successful annual Wight Proms and Wight Games festivals, is transforming the redundant building at the junction of Park Road and Terminus Road to create The Bath House – a thriving café with sushi at the heart of its menu.

Named The Bath House to reflect its former use in the 1940s as a striking two-storey building where the people of Cowes would pay to take a bath. The building, having been used as public conveniences for a time, has fallen into disrepair in the 16 years it has been redundant. But Mike is excited about the future.

Mike said: “As a resident of Cowes, and I am passionate about seeing the town thrive. I'm planning something totally unique yet completely complimentary to all the wonderful places to eat and drink the town offers already.”

As well as providing a place for people to come together and enjoy good food and drink, sourced locally wherever possible, Mike says he also wants to provide other reasons for people to come together at The Bath House. Ideas under consideration include making the venue a ticket hub where people could get tickets to local events or providing ‘pit stop’ facilities for cyclists.

“I just want to bring back to life a building that has fallen into complete disrepair, that hasn’t been used for so many years, into something that people will enjoy visiting, to become a vibrant new place but also respect the surrounding area and the heritage."

“As a singer and composer, I’m keen to have a piano at the venue to enable intimate pop-up events, sing-a-longs and gorgeously relaxing background music on the piano - all done acoustically.”

Mike would love to hear from anyone who remembers it as a bath house and hear their stories of it being part of their lives.

Mike is back with another update on the progress at The Bath House, and it’s really starting to feel like a proper room now!

We’ve got some of the stud walls going up, insulation going in, and even some plasterboard up. It’s amazing how quickly the space is starting to take shape!

A huge thank you to everyone who’s been following along with the project and supporting us - we really appreciate you keeping up with the journey.

A little update from The Bath House...

You’ll notice that the doors and windows are now installed, which means The Bath House is officially watertight!

From here on, most of the work is happening behind the scenes, so you won’t see as much activity from the outside. But rest assured, there’s plenty going on inside as the team continues bringing Mike’s vision to life.

It’s really important to Mike that every detail is just right. Creating something special takes time, and we truly believe that good things are worth waiting for!

Cowes really comes alive during Cowes Week. The sails on the Solent, the buzz around the town and the brilliant atmosphere make it one of our favourite times of the year.

A little behind-the-scenes update...
These fibreglass moulds have been handcrafted here on the Isle of Wight and will soon be used to cast the copings that run around the edge of The Bath House, giving the building that classic John Nash look.
It's great to see another piece of the restoration coming together, and even better that this craftsmanship is being carried out locally.

As construction continues, our builders have been undertaking a series of casting experiments to test the weight, colour and texture of the material that will form one of The Bath House's most distinctive design features: its elegant columns.

Inspired by the architectural vision of John Nash, these columns will play a key role in bringing the building's character to life, carefully balancing heritage inspiration with contemporary craftsmanship.

Every detail matters, and these trials help ensure the finished result looks and feels exactly as intended.

These have just arrived at The Bath House! Can you guess what they are? They are in fact moulds handcrafted on the Isle of Wight that will enable us to bring John Nash (designer of Buckingham Palace, Marble Arch, Brighton Pavilion and East Cowes Castle) back to the site he once designed but no longer exists. These are the lengths proprietor we going to, to bring back the history and create a jewel in Cowes' crown.

Before Bath House owner Mike headed off on tour with @g4_official, he took some time to share some more of the inspiration behind the design vision for The Bath House.

Drawing on calming shades of green from the @edwardbulmerpaint collection, elegant 1940s-style tiling and subtle references to the Isle of Wight's royal heritage, every detail has been carefully considered to create a space that feels both timeless and relaxing.

Inspired by the site’s rich history and the Island's royal connections, the scheme is beginning to take shape beautifully.

As you can see, things have been progressing nicely!

🌦️Despite the April showers trying to slow us down, the frame for the new external wall is now up, and work is well underway on the roof.

🛠️A special mention as well to Max from Elite Edge Construction, who even makes a cameo in the montage – him and his team are doing a fantastic job and we’re really pleased with how everything is coming together.
